The APL Awards 2025

We are thrilled to share with you that our design team scooped four awards at this year’s APL Awards 2025. (The Association of Professional Landscapers)

Hosted this year by the APL’s General Manager, Phil Tremayne and renowned garden designer, writer and public speaker, Peter Donegan, this annual event recognises, and rewards registered members who are committed to providing the highest standards of landscape contracting and client satisfaction. Projects must demonstrate technical and horticultural excellence.

We won ‘Best in Category’ – APL Collaboration with JJH Landscapes for our Hampshire Project ‘Our Happy Place’. Similarly, the project won ‘Best in Category’ for ‘Design over £75k’.

This garden was designed for our client with ‘a sense of escapism’ at its design core. While the design brief was to create an exciting, dynamic outdoor space which made a strong, structural statement in terms of both hard and soft landscaping, it also sought to provide our client with a fully immersive space for quiet contemplation, relaxation and escapism. The planting design scheme has been carefully curated to reflect our client’s years growing up in South Africa.

Our ‘Contemporary Rooftop Garden’ Project won ‘Best in Category’ for ‘Design under £75k’.

Despite the challenge of incredibly restrictive weight loadings on the rooftop, an open, soulless 100m2 rooftop space has been transformed into a beautiful, contemporary roof garden, with dynamic zones for dining, relaxing and entertaining family and friends. Inspired by our client’s eclectic mix of furniture and artwork, the design creates a seamless narrative between the interior and exterior spaces.

Both projects received ‘Gold’ awards for the soft landscaping – planting design schemes.

The icing on the cake however, would have to be the coveted ‘Designer of the Year 2025’ award. It is an honour to be recognised and rewarded by the APL for the design projects we are most passionate about. It is also a privilege to share the evening with our fellow designers, contractors and suppliers.

Design Excellence & Designer and Contractor Collaboration

The Our Happy Place garden won the 'Design Excellence Over £100k' and 'Designer and Contractor Collaboration' awards at the BALI National Landscape Awards.

Pro Landscaper Winner 2024

The Our Happy Place garden won a 'Special Feature Under £50,000' award at the Pro Landscaper Project Awards.

SGD Winner 2024

The 'Treetop Garden' won the highly coveted 'The People's Choice Award' - the only award to be determined by the public vote.

SGD Winner 2024

The 'Treetop Garden' also won the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Award for 'Small Residential Landscapes & Gardens'.

APL Gold Award 2024

This award was for 'A Japanese Inspired Garden' which incorporated essential elements of Japanese garden design with the Japanese design principles of asymmetry, enclosure, borrowed scenery, balance and symbolism.

BBC Gardener's World Platinum Winner 2023

This award was for 'A Contemporary Jacobean Garden' which was inspired by the dry garden planting of the late Beth Chatto. This was built by a team of two landscape contractors in just 16.5 hours.

APL Gold Award 2023

This award was for the 'Treetop Garden' which featured a floating cantilevered deck.

APL Best in Category 2023

This award was for the 'Courtyard Garden', a once traditional cottage garden, now a dry 'garrigue' planting scheme offset with a cool and contemporary back drop.

Pro Landscaper Winner 2023

This award was for 'The Artist's Garden', a contemporary garden created with the latest in material and planting designs, whilst incorporating the client's own artwork.

"I have my own beautiful little corner of Japan to enjoy"

I have always loved the tranquility and eternal nature of traditional Japanese gardens, so was delighted when Adam agreed to bring a little bit of Japan to my little bit of Berkshire.

The design evolved with much arm-waving and looking at many photographs from many books. It needed to incorporate a collection of toro (Japanese stone lanterns) and my favourite rocks recycled from previous gardens, a watering system and lighting for night-time viewing of the garden.

What Adam came up with was deceptively simple but there is interest everywhere you look in the sculptural plants and cloud-pruned trees, the yin-yang of weathered granite stepping stones set against smooth almost-white patio tiles, and the classic grouping of a toro overlooking a reflective pool.

The hard landscaping was done by JJH Landscapes and it was obvious from Adam's regular site visits that they knew each other well, so the whole process was as smooth as construction work can be.

Now that I have my own beautiful little corner of Japan to enjoy, it's almost a shame that I don't have another garden for Adam to design.

Adam did an amazing job when designing my 100 sqm roof terrace. He was professional, courteous and efficient throughout the process, and his design exceeded my expectations in every respect. The greatest hurdle to overcome with designing a roof terrace is to work within considerable weight limitations and yet to still come up with a pleasing result and make it all look effortless. Adam achieved all that and I could not be more happy with the results. Working with Adam on this project was a pleasure. He was always available and helpful on the phone or by email when I had a query … not a ‘given’ these days. I can highly recommend Adam.

The end result is beyond anything I could have imagined and is the essence of everything I had hoped for. The garden entices me in and indeed commands my attention, but the focal point is the pergola; its bold, structural form is the perfect foil for the lush, architectural planting and the natural elements which surround it. It is stunning - as soon as I saw the design, I knew I had to have it in my garden.

Sometime later I asked him if he would come up with a design for a patio area with a couple or raised beds.
