Pro Landscaper’s small project, BIG IMPACT Awards 2020

I am thrilled to announce that I have been shortlisted for an award with Pro Landscaper, the UK’s leading business to business publication within the landscaping sector. Category: Planting Design under £20,000, for my recent project in North Hampshire.

These awards recognise the value of landscape projects under £25,000. They are deemed just as important as larger schemes and are sometimes even more of a challenge. These types of projects are the backbone of the industry and the ‘bread and butter’ for many landscape companies.

These awards celebrate the excellence in individual projects and how people within the industry overcome the restrictions of smaller budgets and spaces, yet still create exceptional landscapes.

Shortlist revealed for Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT Awards 2020

Pro Landscaper has revealed the shortlist for its small project BIG IMPACT Awards. For the third year in a row, the awards will celebrate projects with a value under £25k, which often go underappreciated.

The ceremony will be held on Wednesday 18 November at 5pm as part of the FutureScape VIRTUAL 2020 event, which will take place online from 17 to 19 November.

Jim Wilkinson, managing director of Eljays44 which hosts the awards, says: “Now in its third year, Pro Landscaper’s small project BIG IMPACT Awards has really established itself as an essential part of the UK landscaping diary.

“We all know the importance of this sector and the unbelievable challenges it faces to design and build a beautiful garden on a budget of under £25k. But whatever the budget, clients’ expectations are high, and the companies shortlisted have certainly delivered again this year.

“Good luck to all those shortlisted and we’re really looking forward to seeing who the judges decided who will be the ultimate winners in 2020.”

"I have my own beautiful little corner of Japan to enjoy"

I have always loved the tranquility and eternal nature of traditional Japanese gardens, so was delighted when Adam agreed to bring a little bit of Japan to my little bit of Berkshire.

The design evolved with much arm-waving and looking at many photographs from many books. It needed to incorporate a collection of toro (Japanese stone lanterns) and my favourite rocks recycled from previous gardens, a watering system and lighting for night-time viewing of the garden.

What Adam came up with was deceptively simple but there is interest everywhere you look in the sculptural plants and cloud-pruned trees, the yin-yang of weathered granite stepping stones set against smooth almost-white patio tiles, and the classic grouping of a toro overlooking a reflective pool.

The hard landscaping was done by JJH Landscapes and it was obvious from Adam's regular site visits that they knew each other well, so the whole process was as smooth as construction work can be.

Now that I have my own beautiful little corner of Japan to enjoy, it's almost a shame that I don't have another garden for Adam to design.

Adam did an amazing job when designing my 100 sqm roof terrace. He was professional, courteous and efficient throughout the process, and his design exceeded my expectations in every respect. The greatest hurdle to overcome with designing a roof terrace is to work within considerable weight limitations and yet to still come up with a pleasing result and make it all look effortless. Adam achieved all that and I could not be more happy with the results. Working with Adam on this project was a pleasure. The garden entices me in and indeed commands my attention, but the focal point is the pergola; its bold, structural form is the perfect foil for the lush, architectural planting and the natural elements which surround it. Sometime later I asked him if he would come up with a design for a patio area with a couple or raised beds.
